While Major League Soccer (MLS) shares many of the same rules and structures as other soccer leagues around the world, there are some key differences that make the MLS unique. For instance, unlike many European and other leagues, the MLS does not have a system of promotion and relegation. Instead, all teams are permanent members of the league and their status does not change based on their performance in a given season.
However, MLS does have a distinct competition structure and a variety of events that happen within its framework. Here are some of the key elements of a season in the MLS:
Regular Season: The MLS season typically begins in late February or early March and runs until October. Each team plays 34 games, split evenly between home and away matches. The league is divided into two conferences, Eastern and Western, and teams play a combination of intra and inter-conference games.
Standings and Points: Like many other soccer leagues, teams are awarded three points for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a loss. These points determine a team’s position in the conference standings. At the end of the regular season, the top seven teams from each conference qualify for the playoffs.
Playoffs and the MLS Cup: The playoffs typically begin in late October and culminate in the MLS Cup in early December. The playoffs are a knockout-style tournament where teams compete in a single-elimination format to determine the champions of the MLS. The team with the higher seed typically has a home-field advantage.
Supporters’ Shield: This award is given to the team with the highest point total across both conferences at the end of the regular season. Although this doesn’t carry the same prestige as winning the MLS Cup, it’s a significant achievement and reflects a team’s consistency throughout the season.
