A Century in Red

Since its inception in 1920, Osasuna has been a fixture in Spanish football. The club’s journey in LaLiga has been a tale of constant grit and determination. Although they’ve experienced relegation several times, Osasuna always seems to find their way back to the top flight.

Heroes in Red

Over the years, Osasuna has been home to some talented footballers who have left their mark:

Savio Bortolini enjoyed a successful spell at Osasuna after his time at Real Madrid and Flamengo. His skills on the wing added a different dimension to Osasuna’s game.

Walter Pandiani, known as “El Rifle”, became a fan favorite during his time at Osasuna. He later showcased his striking prowess at clubs like Espanyol and Birmingham City.

Javad Nekounam, the Iranian international, became an instrumental figure in the heart of Osasuna’s midfield. He also had stints with teams like Esteghlal and Al-Kuwait.

Red Rivalries

Osasuna’s most heated rivalry is with Real Zaragoza. The animosity between the two sides is known as the Aragonese-Navarrese derby.

Locally, Osasuna enjoys a rivalry with Athletic Bilbao, reflecting the historical Navarre-Basque tensions.

While not as intense, their matches against Real Madrid and Barcelona always prove to be fiercely contested affairs.

A Visit to El Sadar

El Sadar Stadium, named after a river near Pamplona, is an atmospheric footballing arena. While it’s not the largest, it offers a unique, intimate experience.

If you’re after the best view, aim for the ‘Tribuna Alta’ section, offering a panoramic view of the pitch. Tickets here usually cost around €65-€75.

‘Sector Sur’ and ‘Sector Norte’ offer a cheaper alternative, with tickets averaging around €35-€45. The atmosphere here is vibrant, thanks to the passionate local fans.

For the ultimate experience, the ‘Preferencia’ section is where you want to be. It offers excellent sightlines and is close to the action, but comes with a higher price tag of about €95.

Osasuna is a testament to the beauty of community football in LaLiga. From its historic journey, notable players, exciting rivalries, to the atmospheric El Sadar Stadium, the club offers a footballing experience that’s authentic, vibrant, and full of heart.

The Game Goes On

  • Name Meaning: The word ‘Osasuna’ means ‘health’ in the Basque language. The club’s full name, Club Atlético Osasuna, essentially means ‘Athletic Health Club’.
  • Community Ownership: Unlike many professional football clubs, Osasuna is not owned by a single entity or individual. Instead, it’s owned by its club members, or ‘socios’, maintaining a democratic structure where the ‘socios’ vote for the club president.
  • Surviving the Storm: During the 2013-2014 season, Osasuna was embroiled in a financial crisis that almost led to its demise. However, thanks to a successful fundraising campaign, the club was able to navigate through this challenging period and stay afloat.
  • Inconsistency: Osasuna has often oscillated between the first and second tier of Spanish football. Despite the lack of consistent top-flight status, the club’s dedicated fan base continues to support them passionately.
  • Stadium Renovations: In 2019, El Sadar Stadium underwent significant renovations to modernize the facility and improve the fan experience. The updated stadium now boasts enhanced seating, improved accessibility, and additional hospitality areas.
  • Red Wall: Osasuna has a reputation for being extremely tough to beat at home. This characteristic has earned their home ground, El Sadar Stadium, the nickname ‘The Red Wall’.
  • Record Appearance Holder: Patxi Puñal holds the record for the most appearances for Osasuna, playing over 500 games for the club.
  • Female Team: Like many other football clubs, Osasuna also has a female team, CA Osasuna Femenino, which competes in the Segunda División Pro, the second tier of women’s football in Spain.
  • Youth Academy: Osasuna has a strong focus on youth development, with their academy, Tajonar, producing several players who have gone on to have successful professional careers.
